Why Do We Do This?

Search for Meaning

What are the things that truly matter? Information technology has led to an explosion in the amount of available information. Some might argue that the meaning of humanity is the search for more information. We are wired to be curious. For a long time, we have thought that the digital world's footprint does not exist or matter. After all, they’re just abstract zeros and ones somewhere in something called a cloud, right?

Our information about the world has been growing day by day and so has our awareness about the state of our environment too. As the digital world alongside trends like AI grows, so does the energy need, piles of electronic waste, and redundant information increase. The world is filling up with physical and digital waste. We need to demystify the cloud and open up the digital consumption patterns of each of us: there are effects on the environment.

We live in a world where there is more and more information and less and less meaning.
— Jean Baudrillard

Introducing our goal

Our goal is to bring sustainability into the center of software development along with other dimensions, such as security and reliability. We are utilizing approaches like green code and GreenOps, as well as other value optimization disciplines like FinOps and performance engineering. We strive to operate at the intersection of all technologies and techniques that could help nature. In the end, it’s about using fewer computers and in a more energy efficient way. We aim for incremental positive changes over time and want to help organizations in the EU stay competitive with directives like Corporate Sustainability Reporting (CSRD).

The IT industry is never going to be completely “green”. Even with 100% renewable energy, there will still be a negative impact on the environment since all our technologies depend on mining materials. The thing we can do is to make systems as efficient as possible using the skills we have accumulated over the years. We want to leave the environment in at least a little better shape than before. Less is more.

An old, decomposing rowing boat once belonged to a fisherman only two generations ago. Luckily, we still remember what is real.

Alignment, cooperation, and action

The IT industry is not the biggest environmental concern, but it is growing rapidly. We align ourselves with the rising sustainability movement. Every industry needs to do this so that we can make it together. It’s about a shared mindset and values toward our environment. We dream of building a community of IT experts who will share our views. The best things happen via cooperation, so we invite every individual, organization, and company to join our cause.

Now is the time to act! We will allocate 10% of our profits to preserving the environment. This is not just about charity but taking a stance: What do we consider value and value creation? While consuming fewer resources is essential, it’s also important to think about how we distribute the created wealth. Could there be new ways to give back? We’re taking one step, maybe a small step. But from the bottom of our hearts, we truly believe the direction is right.
